About Bladwijzer

About Bladwijzer and its maker

Bladwijzer is a free garden guide for looking after your garden the natural way: you recognise what grows there, you know what to do plant by plant and month by month, and you make your garden richer in wildlife step by step.

Who makes Bladwijzer?

Bladwijzer is made by Jani Van Quaethem. He trained as an arborist and keeps bees.

That is why Bladwijzer is not just about identifying plants, but above all about what comes next: when and how to prune, what to plant and what your garden means for bees, birds and hedgehogs.

Why Bladwijzer exists

There are good, free apps for identifying a plant. What was missing is what comes next: what do you do with that plant, and when? Bladwijzer tells you plant by plant and month by month: when and how to prune, sow, plant and harvest, with choices that are good for nature.

Bladwijzer is free and made for gardens in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Independent

  • Bladwijzer has no web shop and sells nothing: its advice has nothing to sell you.
  • No ads, no tracking cookies, no selling of data.
  • Bladwijzer takes no commission: with a professional or when hiring equipment, you make your own arrangements.

Where the data comes from

  • ObsIdentify: photo identification by Observation International and Naturalis, with the names and status of species from waarnemingen.be.
  • Pl@ntNet: a second plant identification service, from a French research consortium.
  • Wikimedia Commons: the photos, always credited with their author and licence.
  • Wikipedia: a short description of species that do not yet have their own profile.
  • The plant profiles, the pruning and sowing calendars and the recipes were written for Bladwijzer, not copied from other sites.

How identification, the identification keys, the maps and your data work is explained under Sources and how it works.
