Spiked speedwell: when to prune it?
Cut off faded spikes in July for a second flush. In March, cut last year’s dead stems back to just above the ground.
Spiked speedwell: how to prune it?
- After the first flush, cut faded spikes back to the first sturdy pair of leaves.
- After the second flush, you can leave the last spikes for a winter silhouette.
- In March, cut all dead stems back to just above the young leaves at the base.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and July. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Spiked speedwell flowers in June–August, when it attracts bees and butterflies.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
