Silver spike grass: when to prune it?
In March, before the new leaves really get going. Leave the grass standing all winter.
What else to prune in those months? March
Silver spike grass: how to prune it?
- Cut the old flower stems off at the base.
- Cut the old leaves back to 10–15 cm above the ground, or comb out the dead leaves with gloved fingers.
- Spare the young green leaves already coming from the centre.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- If you only cut back in March, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
Caution: Do not cut back in autumn: an open centre stays wet in winter and rots more quickly, and you lose the lovely winter plumes.
