False spiraea (Astilbe × arendsii): when to prune it?
In March, before the new shoots appear. Leave the plumes standing over winter.
What else to prune in those months? March
False spiraea (Astilbe × arendsii): how to prune it?
- Leave the brown plumes and old leaves all winter: they look good and protect the buds.
- In March, cut all the old stems and leaves off just above the ground.
- Cut carefully around the red buds already visible at the base.
- After flowering there is nothing to do; cutting back does not give a second flush.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- If you only cut back in March, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
