Banksian rose: when to prune it?
Prune straight after flowering, in June–July. It flowers on stems that are a year old or more.
Banksian rose: how to prune it?
- Cut flowered side shoots back to a few buds above the main stem.
- Each year, remove a few of the oldest, least productive stems, at the base or above a strong young shoot.
- Tie in the new long shoots: these will flower next year.
- Remove dead or frosted stems as soon as you see them.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: June–July.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in June–July can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Banksian rose flowers in May–June, when it attracts bees.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
Caution: Do not prune in winter or spring: you would cut off this year’s flower buds.
