Tropical pitcher plant: when to prune it?
Pruning is not really necessary. In March or April you can cut back long, bare stems so the plant produces new shoots and pitchers at the base.
Tropical pitcher plant: how to prune it?
- Cut stems that are too long back to a few leaves above the pot, just above a leaf.
- Cut off dried pitchers at the end of the tendril, but keep the leaf as long as it is green: it keeps making food.
- Remove brown, dead leaves completely.
- Use the stem pieces you cut off as cuttings.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March–April.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- A houseplant lives indoors, so wildlife hardly notices the pruning. Healthy clippings can go on the compost.
