Banyan: how to prune it?

  1. Cut off the top or overlong branches just above a leaf or a bud; new side shoots grow from below.
  2. Prune with sharp, clean secateurs.
  3. Dab the milky sap that runs from the cut with a damp cloth; it soon dries.
  4. Use the removed tips as cuttings.

How much to cut, and how often?

  • One pruning period a year: March–April.

What does it mean for wildlife?

  • A houseplant lives indoors, so wildlife hardly notices the pruning. Healthy clippings can go on the compost.

Caution: The white milky sap irritates skin and eyes: wear gloves and protect the floor. Banyan is poisonous: wear gloves and keep clippings away from children, pets and livestock.
