Soft-leaved sedge: when to prune it?
From late February to March, before the new shoots start to grow.
What else to prune in those months? March
Soft-leaved sedge: how to prune it?
- Cut the old brown foliage back to about 5 cm above the ground.
- On larger areas you can mow with the mower on its highest setting.
- Pull dead leaves out of the clump with your fingers.
- Cut off spent flower spikes if you want to limit seedlings.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- If you only cut back in March, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
