Plantain-leaved sedge: when to prune it?
Late February to March, before the new leaves come through. Real pruning is not needed.
What else to prune in those months? March
Plantain-leaved sedge: how to prune it?
- Pull or cut off brown and damaged leaves at the base.
- If the clump looks very tatty after a hard winter, cut everything back to 5–10 cm; the foliage regrows quickly.
- Leave healthy green leaves in place.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- If you only cut back in March, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
