Orange New Zealand sedge: when to prune it?
Do not cut back: in April just clear out the dead leaves, and in September you can cut off untidy flower stems.
Orange New Zealand sedge: how to prune it?
- In April, comb or pull the dead leaves out of the tuft, wearing gloves.
- Cut long, spent flower stems off at the base when they become untidy.
- Do not cut the tuft down to the ground: New Zealand sedges recover slowly from that.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: April and September. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.
