Northern sea oats: when to prune it?
In late February or March, before the new shoots appear.
Northern sea oats: how to prune it?
- Cut all stems and old leaves back to 5–10 cm above the ground.
- Leave the clump standing until then: it looks good in winter and protects the crown.
- Cut off the flower stems earlier if you want to prevent seedlings.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: February–March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- If you only cut back in February–March, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
