Rockrose (Cistus × hybridus): when to prune it?
Prune lightly after flowering, in August. In April, only cut out frost damage.
Rockrose (Cistus × hybridus): how to prune it?
- After flowering, shorten this year’s shoots by about a third to keep the shrub compact.
- Always cut into green, leafy wood and never into old, bare branches.
- In April, cut back shoots browned by frost to just above healthy green leaves.
- An old, bare shrub cannot be rejuvenated by hard pruning: replace it with a young plant grown from a cutting instead.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: April and August. You don’t have to prune in every one.
- Prune in moderation: never remove more than about a third of the shrub at once.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in April and August can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Rockrose (Cistus × hybridus) flowers in May–July, when it attracts bees.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: Never cut into old, bare wood: it usually does not produce new shoots from there.
