Dalmatian iris: when to prune it?
After flowering in June, cut off the spent stems; in October clear away dead or spotted leaves.
Dalmatian iris: how to prune it?
- Cut the spent flower stems off at the base, just above the rhizome.
- Remove dead or brown leaves in autumn or at the end of winter.
- When dividing or replanting, cut the leaf fan back to about a third.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: June and October. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.
Caution: All parts are poisonous, especially the rhizome. Wear gloves: the sap can irritate the skin.
