Winter daphne (Daphne odora): when to prune it?
Pruning is rarely needed. If you want to shape it, do so straight after flowering, in late April or May.
Winter daphne (Daphne odora): how to prune it?
- Cut out dead, damaged or frosted shoots back to healthy wood.
- Shorten an overlong shoot to just above a leaf or side shoot.
- Cutting flowering sprigs for a vase is a light prune in itself.
- Never cut hard into old wood: it regrows poorly or not at all.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: April–May.
- Prune in moderation: never remove more than about a third of the shrub at once.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in April–May can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: Wear gloves when pruning: the sap can irritate the skin. Do not leave prunings where animals could eat them. Winter daphne (Daphne odora) is poisonous: wear gloves and keep clippings away from children, pets and livestock.
