Broad-leaved pondweed: when to prune it?
Thin in May–June when growth gets too dense; tidy up in September.
Broad-leaved pondweed: how to prune it?
- Remove excess stems with a rake or net, or cut them below the water surface.
- In September, cut or skim off yellowing leaves and stems.
- Leave the removed material at the pond edge for a day so that small water creatures can crawl back in.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: May and September. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Caution: Do not throw removed pieces into ditches or natural waters: they can start growing there.
