Hard fern: when to prune it?
In March, just before the new fronds unfurl. Real pruning is not needed: you only tidy up old foliage.
What else to prune in those months? March
Hard fern: how to prune it?
- Cut brown, damaged or flattened fronds off close to the base.
- Leave healthy green fronds: they stay attractive for another season and protect the crown.
- Remove last year’s dead fertile fronds.
- Take care with the young curled fronds in the crown: they snap easily.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Caution: Never cut the whole plant back at once and leave the crown alone: that is where the new fronds come from.
