Dwarf goat’s beard: when to prune it?
In March, cut away the old, dead foliage. You can remove the faded plumes in August, but you do not have to.
Dwarf goat’s beard: how to prune it?
- In March, cut the dead leaves and old stems just above the ground, before the new leaves appear.
- If you do not want seed, cut the plumes back to the foliage after flowering.
- If you leave them, they decorate the border well into winter.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and August. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.
Caution: Cut carefully in spring: the new buds sit right at ground level.
