Dwarf bulrush: when to prune it?
In March, before the new leaves appear. Otherwise it needs hardly any pruning.
What else to prune in those months? March
Dwarf bulrush: how to prune it?
- Cut dead foliage and old stems back to just above the water line or the soil.
- Fish loose leaves and stems out of the water so they do not rot.
- If you want no seedlings or fluff in the pond, cut off the heads you are not drying before they break up.
- Remove runners growing over the edge of the basket.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.
Caution: Never cut the stems below the water line: the hollow stems fill with water and the rhizome may rot.
