Wood melick: when to prune it?
In late February or March, before the new leaves appear.
What else to prune in those months? March
Wood melick: how to prune it?
- Leave the dead flower heads and leaves standing over winter: insects overwinter in them and the leaves protect the rhizomes.
- In March, comb the old leaves out of the clump with your fingers or a rake, or cut them back short.
- Do not cut into the young green leaves: the plant needs them to grow.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- If you only cut back in March, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
