Bicoloured barrenwort (Epimedium × versicolor): when to prune it?
In February, before the new flower stems push through the soil.
What else to prune in those months? February
Bicoloured barrenwort (Epimedium × versicolor): how to prune it?
- Cut all the old leaves to just above ground level with shears or a hedge trimmer.
- On large areas you can also carefully use a mower on its highest setting, when the ground is dry.
- Rake away the cut leaves, then spread a thin layer of leaf mould.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: February.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- If you only cut back in February, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
Caution: Don’t leave it too late: by early March the flower stems are already hidden among the old leaves and are easily cut off with them.
