Hamilton’s spindle (Euonymus hamiltonianus): when to prune it?
Hardly needed: let it grow freely. If you must prune, do it in February–March while the shrub is bare.
Hamilton’s spindle (Euonymus hamiltonianus): how to prune it?
- Remove dead, damaged and crossing branches back to a healthy side shoot.
- Thin a shrub that has become too dense by taking out one or two old stems at the base.
- Do not shorten every branch: it spoils the natural shape and costs flowers and fruit.
- Wear gloves: all parts of the plant are poisonous.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: February–March.
- Prune in moderation: never remove more than about a third of the shrub at once.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Pruning in March can fall in the nesting season (15 March–15 August). Check carefully for nesting birds first: disturbing an active nest is against the law.
- Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.
Common mistakes
- Clipping without first checking for nesting birds.
- Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.
Caution: Do not prune in autumn: you would cut off exactly the fruits you planted it for. Hamilton’s spindle (Euonymus hamiltonianus) is poisonous: wear gloves and keep clippings away from children, pets and livestock.
