Aspen fleabane: when to prune it?
After the first flowering, usually in July, cut it back hard for a second flush. In March, cut away the dead stems.
Aspen fleabane: how to prune it?
- In July, cut the spent stems back to a hand’s width above the ground or to the fresh leaves.
- Then water and add a little compost: within a few weeks a second, slightly smaller flush follows.
- Leave the last stems standing in autumn and cut them back to the new shoots in March.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and July. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Aspen fleabane flowers in June–August, when it attracts bees and butterflies.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
