Gardenia: when to prune it?
Straight after flowering, in August–September. Pruning is not essential, but it keeps the plant compact and bushy.
Gardenia: how to prune it?
- Cut over-long shoots back to just above a leaf or pair of leaves.
- Remove faded and browned flowers to keep the plant looking tidy.
- Cut dead and weak twigs out at the base.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: August–September.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- A houseplant lives indoors, so wildlife hardly notices the pruning. Healthy clippings can go on the compost.
Caution: Do not prune later than September: after that you remove next year’s flower buds. Gardenia is poisonous: wear gloves and keep clippings away from children, pets and livestock.
