Yorkshire fog: when to prune it?
At the end of June and again in September, like a hay meadow.
Yorkshire fog: how to prune it?
- Mow at 5–10 cm with a scythe, brush cutter or bar mower.
- Let the cuttings dry for a few days, then remove them.
- Always leave a strip standing: young small skipper caterpillars overwinter in the leaf sheaths of the tufts.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: June and September. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Caution: Do not cut the whole meadow short in autumn: the overwintering caterpillars would disappear with it.
