Germander speedwell: when to prune it?
After flowering, in July, and a second time in September.
Germander speedwell: how to prune it?
- Mow at 5–8 cm; this spares the creeping stems.
- Leave the cuttings for a few days so the seeds can drop, then rake them off.
- Removing the cuttings keeps the soil poor and the grass weak.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: July and September. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
