Oxeye daisy: when to prune it?
Cut back or mow after the first flush, in July; in a wildflower meadow, mow again in September.
Oxeye daisy: how to prune it?
- In the border, cut the faded stems back to just above the leaf rosette.
- Let some flower heads go to seed if you want it to self-seed.
- Mow a wildflower meadow at 8–10 cm and leave the cuttings for a few days so the seeds drop out; then remove them.
- In the border, leave the last stems standing in autumn as shelter for insects.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: July and September. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
