Cat’s-ear: when and how to prune

Cat’s-ear is best pruned in June and September.

Cat’s-ear: when to prune it?
At the end of June and in September when mowing a verge or hay meadow; in a lawn, with the usual mowing.
Cat’s-ear: how to prune it?
- Mow at a height of 5–8 cm: the flat rosette is then largely spared and quickly sends up new flower stems.
- Leave the cuttings for a few days so the seeds can drop, then remove them.
- Leave a strip or corner unmown each time, so there are always flowers left for the bees.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: June and September. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Caution: Preferably mow on a cloudy day or late in the afternoon, when the heads are closed and fewer bees are on them.
