Checkerbloom: when to prune it?
In July, straight after the first flowering, and in March before new growth.
Checkerbloom: how to prune it?
- Cut spent flower stems back in July to just above the leaves at the base.
- Then water and give a little compost: within a few weeks a second, lighter flush follows.
- In March cut all old stems and brown leaves down to just above the ground.
- For a bouquet, take only spikes whose lowest flowers are already open.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and July. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Checkerbloom flowers in June–August, when it attracts bees and butterflies.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
