Cockspur thorn: when to prune it?

In January–February, in frost-free weather, while the tree is dormant. Otherwise it needs little pruning.

What else to prune in those months? January · February

Cockspur thorn: how to prune it?

  1. Remove dead, broken and crossing branches.
  2. Take out suckers and shoots along the trunk.
  3. Shorten overlong side branches to keep the shape; it tolerates pruning well.
  4. Clear away the cuttings straight away: the thorns stay sharp for a long time.

How much to cut, and how often?

  • One pruning period a year: January–February.
  • Never remove more than about a quarter of the crown at once. Better a little every year.

What does it mean for wildlife?

  • The pruning months fall outside the nesting season (15 March–15 August), so you won’t disturb nesting birds.
  • Cockspur thorn flowers in May–June, when it attracts bees.
  • Prunings can go on a dead hedge or brash pile in a corner of the garden: shelter for hedgehogs, wrens and insects.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving a stub or sawing flush with the trunk: cut just outside the branch collar.

Caution: Wear sturdy gloves and safety glasses: the thorns are long and sharp and can cause deep wounds.
