Cinnamon fern: when to prune it?
In March remove the old fronds, before the new croziers unfurl. In June, optionally, the withered fertile fronds.
Cinnamon fern: how to prune it?
- In March cut the dead, brown fronds off just above the crown.
- In June cut the withered fertile fronds off at the base if you want a tidier clump.
- Work carefully around the woolly croziers in the centre: they are the new fronds.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and June. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.
Caution: Do not cut off the young cinnamon-brown fertile fronds in spring: they are its main feature.
