Butterfly weed: when to prune it?
Remove faded clusters in August; cut back the dead stems in March.
Butterfly weed: how to prune it?
- Cut faded clusters back to a side shoot: a second flush often follows.
- Leave a few stems standing in winter so you know where it is.
- In March cut the old stems back to 10 cm above the ground; the stumps mark the spot.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and August. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Butterfly weed flowers in July–September, when it attracts bees and butterflies.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
Caution: Wear gloves: the sap is poisonous and can irritate the skin and eyes.
