Coffee plant: when to prune it?
Pruning is rarely needed. In March or April you can pinch out the tip or cut back a plant that has grown too large.
Coffee plant: how to prune it?
- Pinch out the tip of a young plant just above a pair of leaves if you want a wider, bushier shrub.
- If it gets too tall, cut the main stem just above a pair of leaves; new shoots will grow from there.
- Remove dead, dry twigs and yellow leaves.
- Do not cut branches carrying flower buds or berries.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March–April.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- A houseplant lives indoors, so wildlife hardly notices the pruning. Healthy clippings can go on the compost.
Caution: Coffee plant is poisonous: wear gloves and keep clippings away from children, pets and livestock.
