Globeflower: when to prune it?
After flowering, in June or July. Otherwise it needs hardly any pruning.
Globeflower: how to prune it?
- Cut the faded flower stems back to just above the leaves.
- Also cut away untidy or withered leaves after flowering: fresh new leaves will follow.
- After cutting back, water and give a little compost for a chance of repeat flowering.
- Wear gloves: the sap can irritate the skin.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: June–July.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Globeflower flowers in May–June, when it attracts bees.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
Caution: Do not let the plant dry out after cutting back: without water there will be no new leaves and no second flush. Globeflower is poisonous: wear gloves and keep clippings away from children, pets and livestock.
