Cornflower: when to prune it?
Deadhead in July; clear the dead plants in September.
Cornflower: how to prune it?
- In July cut faded heads back to just above a side bud; new flowers will follow.
- From August let the last flowers set seed, for next year and for the birds.
- In September pull up or cut down the dry plants once the seed has dropped, and lightly loosen the soil.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: July and September. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
