Chinese fountain grass: when to prune it?
In March, just before new growth starts. Not in autumn: the old leaves protect the crown from wet and frost.
What else to prune in those months? March
Chinese fountain grass: how to prune it?
- Cut all stems and leaves back to 10–15 cm above the ground.
- Tie a large clump together with string first: you can then cut it in one go and clearing up is easy.
- Take care not to damage the new green shoots at the base.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- If you only cut back in March, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
Caution: Do not cut back in autumn: a clump cut short rots more easily in a wet winter.
