Sea lavender: how to prune it?
- Cut the old, dead flower sprays back to the rosette.
- Remove dead, brown leaves at the base by hand or with scissors.
- Cut the flowers for a bouquet or for drying in July–August, when most of the little flowers are open.
- Hang the stems upside down in a dry, dark, airy place to dry them.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Sea lavender flowers in July–September, when it attracts bees.
- If you only cut back in March, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
