Lantana: when to prune it?
In March, before the plant starts growing again. An oversized plant can be trimmed in October before bringing it in.
Lantana: how to prune it?
- In March, cut all branches back by about half to two thirds, just above a bud or pair of leaves.
- Remove dead, weak and crossing branches.
- On a standard, trim the head into a rounded shape.
- In October, shorten branches that are too long so the plant fits indoors more easily.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: March and October. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Lantana flowers in June–October, when it attracts bees and butterflies.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
Caution: Wear gloves: the leaves can irritate the skin and the stems are sometimes prickly. Lantana is poisonous: wear gloves and keep clippings away from children, pets and livestock.
