Hop trefoil: when to prune it?
No real pruning. Mow a dry verge or wildflower meadow in July, after the first seed set, and again in September.
Hop trefoil: how to prune it?
- Mow only when most of the heads are brown and dry, so the seed can fall.
- Leave the cuttings for a few days so the last seeds drop out, then remove them.
- In a lawn: set the mower high and skip a few cuts in summer.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: July and September. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
