Marsh fern: when to prune it?
In March, before the new fronds emerge. Otherwise marsh fern is not pruned.
What else to prune in those months? March
Marsh fern: how to prune it?
- Cut last year’s dead fronds off just above the ground.
- Pull out dead foliage hanging in the pond water, so it does not rot there and enrich the water.
- Work carefully around the growing points: the new, coiled fronds are already waiting just below the surface.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Caution: Do not cut the old fronds off in autumn: they protect the plant through winter.
