Sensitive fern: when to prune it?
In March, before the new fronds appear. Otherwise it needs no pruning.
What else to prune in those months? March
Sensitive fern: how to prune it?
- In March cut the dead, brown fronds and the old fertile spikes off just above the ground.
- For a tidier look after the first frost, you can remove the blackened green fronds in autumn, but leave the fertile spikes.
- For a dried arrangement, cut a few brown spikes in autumn or winter.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.
Caution: Pruning does not keep it small: you limit its spread by chopping through the rhizomes, not by cutting the fronds.
