China doll: how to prune it?

  1. Cut long or bare stems back to just above a side shoot or bud, by about a third of their length.
  2. Remove dead, weak and crossing stems right at the base.
  3. Pinch out the tips: it branches better and becomes fuller.
  4. Use a sharp, clean knife or pair of secateurs.

How much to cut, and how often?

  • One pruning period a year: March–April.

What does it mean for wildlife?

  • A houseplant lives indoors, so wildlife hardly notices the pruning. Healthy clippings can go on the compost.

Caution: Never remove more than a third of the plant at once, and do not prune in winter: it is not growing then and recovers slowly.
