Mignonette: when to prune it?
Mignonette is not really pruned. In July and August, though, regularly remove the faded flower spikes.
Mignonette: how to prune it?
- Cut faded spikes back to just above a leaf or a young side shoot.
- Pick a few spikes regularly for a posy: that too keeps the plant flowering.
- In September, let a few spikes set seed if you want to save your own.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: July–August.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Mignonette flowers in June–September, when it attracts bees.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
