Basket of gold: when and how to prune
Aurinia saxatilis
Basket of gold is best pruned in May–June.
| Pruning months | May–June |
|---|---|
| Flowering | April–May |
| Good for bees, butterflies and birds | Yes, for bees |
| Native to Belgium | No, planted |
Basket of gold: when to prune it?
Straight after flowering, in late May or in June.
Basket of gold: how to prune it?
- Cut back the spent flower clusters and about a third of the cushion.
- Do not cut into the bare, woody part: it regrows poorly from there.
- Leave a few clusters if you want seedlings.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: May–June.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Basket of gold flowers in April–May, when it attracts bees.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
Caution: Do not prune in autumn or winter: you would remove the shoots that should flower in April.
