Sweet scabious: how to prune it?
- Pinch out the growing tip when the plant is 15 cm tall, just above a pair of leaves.
- Cut off faded heads with their whole stem, back to just above a leaf or side bud.
- In September, leave a few heads if you want to dry the seed heads or save seed.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: May and July–September. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Sweet scabious flowers in June–October, when it attracts bees and butterflies.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
