Garden tulip: when to prune it?
Faded flowers in May; the leaves only in June, once they are yellow.
Garden tulip: how to prune it?
- Cut off the faded flower just below the bloom, so no seed is formed.
- Leave the stem and leaves: they feed the bulb for next year.
- Only cut or pull away the leaves when they are completely yellow, usually in June.
- Hide the dying leaves behind later-emerging perennials.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: May–June.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.
Caution: Put plants with tulip fire in the household waste, not on the compost heap.
