Garden verbena: when to prune it?
Remove spent flower heads all summer. In July–August you can shorten stems that are too long or bare.
Garden verbena: how to prune it?
- Cut off spent heads just above the next pair of leaves.
- Shorten long, bare stems by a third to a half; the plant will branch again.
- After trimming, water and give a little flowering-plant feed.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: July–August.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Garden verbena flowers in June–October, when it attracts bees and butterflies.
- If pruning falls during flowering, wait until it is over or leave part of the plant to flower, so bees and butterflies still benefit.
