Bugbane: when to prune it?
Hardly any pruning is needed. Cut the dead stems down in March, before the new shoots appear.
What else to prune in those months? March
Bugbane: how to prune it?
- Leave the spent stems and seed pods over winter: they look lovely with frost on them and shelter insects.
- In March, cut all old stems and dead leaves back to just above the ground.
- Take care with the young shoots that emerge in April: they are brittle.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: March.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Bugbane flowers in September–October, when it attracts bees and butterflies.
- If you only cut back in March, the old stems stand through the winter: insects overwinter in them and birds eat the seeds.
Caution: Clear up the prunings and wear gloves if you have sensitive skin: all parts are poisonous if eaten.
