Summer cypress: when to prune it?
Pruning is not necessary. For a neat ball or hedge, clip lightly in July and August.
Summer cypress: how to prune it?
- Use sharp shears to remove only the outer 3–5 cm of the shoots.
- Do not cut back beyond the green leaves, or you will be left with bare patches.
- Stop clipping by mid-August so the plant goes into autumn looking full.
- Pull the plants up before they set seed, usually in October.
How much to cut, and how often?
- One pruning period a year: July–August.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.
Caution: Do not let the plants set seed: summer cypress can self-seed heavily.
