Sunflower: when to prune it?

No pruning is needed. Clear the dead stems in November, or leave them standing until spring.

What else to prune in those months? November

Sunflower: how to prune it?

  1. After flowering, let the seed heads ripen on the plant: tits and goldfinches will empty them.
  2. On branching varieties, cut flowers for the vase regularly during flowering: new ones will follow.
  3. Cut the dead stems in November or leave them until spring; then put them on a brush pile for insects.
  4. Do not pull out the roots: they rot down in the soil and loosen it.

How much to cut, and how often?

  • One pruning period a year: November.

What does it mean for wildlife?

  • Don’t cut more than you need to: what stays standing gives insects and birds food and shelter.
