Creeping thistle: when to prune it?
In June, when the buds appear, and again in August.
Creeping thistle: how to prune it?
- To weaken it: mow or cut the stems just above the ground when the buds appear.
- Repeat every time it grows back; after a few years the patch becomes weaker.
- In a wild corner: let it flower for butterflies and bees, and cut off the heads before they turn fluffy.
- In autumn, leave a few dead stems standing until spring as shelter for insects.
How much to cut, and how often?
- There are 2 pruning periods a year: June and August. You don’t have to prune in every one.
What does it mean for wildlife?
- As a native plant, it feeds more insects than a non-native species.
Caution: Wear sturdy gloves: the leaves are spiny.
